Websec's Wyatt Harvey and Sebastian Bethell returned to the University of Victoria on March 28, 2024 to deliver From Basics to Burp Part 2, a hands-on workshop covering PortSwigger's Web Security Academy and practical Burp Suite testing, in partnership with OWASP Victoria and UVic VikeSec.
Websec's Wyatt Harvey and Sebastian Bethell returned to UVic on March 28, 2024 to deliver From Basics to Burp Part 2: Navigating PortSwigger Academy, the second session in a workshop series hosted in partnership with OWASP Victoria and UVic VikeSec.
What Part 2 Covered
The session built on the foundations laid in Part 1. Attendees worked through introductory labs on PortSwigger's Web Security Academy using Burp Suite, identifying and exploiting a range of web application vulnerabilities in a controlled environment. The format kept hands on keyboards throughout so students could see how real bugs behave rather than only reading about them.
Venue and Format
The workshop ran from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM PDT (doors at 5:30 PM) in ECS 116 at the University of Victoria, with networking at a local pub afterward. Participants brought laptops with Burp Suite Community Edition installed and active PortSwigger accounts, so the session could spend its time on the labs rather than on setup.
About the Series
From Basics to Burp is a three-part hands-on series built for newcomers to web application security. OWASP is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to improving software security, and its projects, tools, and chapters are free and open to anyone. Websec is a long-time supporter of the OWASP Victoria chapter, and we are proud to help the local community by running sessions like this at UVic.
